Meet the Founder

Hello! Daniel derscheid here. Growing up fishing here in Michigan, I have always been a "bait guy" trying new techniques and color variations to catch fish.

So in the summer of 2022, when I discovered that I could make my own baits in whatever color I wanted, I was hooked. I started making soft plastic lures in my garage as a hobby, but have since grown this hobby into a small business. Welcome to up north bait co!

HOW ARE OUR LURES MADE?

Heat plastic

Measure out appropriate amount of plastic. Heat at 350 degrees.

Add colorant

& glitter

Stir in the desired colorant and glitter

pour into mold

Pour the plastic into an aluminum mold

let the plastic cool down

Wait for plastic to cool down before removing

trim & Cure the lure

Inspect the lure, trim off imperfections, and let cure for 24 hours

WHAT SETS US APART?

Because we are a privately owned business, I can customize baits to fit the customer's needs. I use several different types of plastisol, which allows me to create baits that are softer (for worm-style baits), or firmer which helps with durability (for craw-style baits). I have a floating blend of plastisol for frogs or drop shot rig baits. I can also add salt or various scents to baits according to the fisherman’s request. Perhaps the greatest advantage of a small bait maker is the color options. I can work with customers to create numerous color combinations, an example would be to add purple, black, and gold glitter to a watermelon base color to produce a variation that fish have never seen before. It is the ability to customize the baits you know catch fish, which in turn, gives you an advantage over other fishermen.
